ZHOU QUAN, BORN IN 1986

EDUCATION

Zhou Quan, born in 1986 in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China. In 2007, he went to study abroad in Singapore and was admitted to the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2008, majoring in Western painting. He returned to China in 2012 and is currently based in Beijing.

His works are often formed through the interplay of multiple materials—brushes, paints, canvas, linen, wood, paper, and more—each becoming an integral element of the artwork. In the use of materials, the artist perceives the consciousness and spirit of all living things, the dissolution of self-awareness, and the transformation of intentional and unintentional expression into visual messages. In his exploration of boundless natural energy, Zhou Quan becomes a conduit of information, engaging in a dialogue with nature and unveiling a unique aesthetic born from the energies of the natural world.

During his studies, he encountered the ancient European technique of tempera painting, which led him to an enduring pursuit of this traditional medium. He explores its broader expressive potential, hoping to enrich his own artistic language through this time-honored practice. By using classical techniques to reflect modern humanity and conditions of existence, he merges the old and the new, creating a distinctive style he calls “Contemporary Classicism.”

  • In 2017, he established Niu de X Art Studio in Beijing, where he began exploring the fusion of diverse materials and modes of expression.

  • In 2018, he launched the “Heaven’s Secrets” series, using divination concepts to form abstract compositions.

  • In 2021, he created the “Paper Quilling” installation series using strips of paper as his primary medium.

  • In 2023, he introduced a digital print series themed around fruit.

His works have been exhibited frequently in Singapore and are represented by galleries, as well as held in private collections across Southeast Asia and China.
